SANTIAGO REYES PRESENTS « TRAJECTOIRE INFINITIVE » DURING CONTEMPORARY ART FESTIVAL IN MARSEILLE

By Lise Guéhenneux

Provence Art Contemporain boasts 62 members, making it one of the largest networks of art structures in France, operating year-round by offering residencies to freshly graduated artists as well as to more established ones, and supporting the projects of numerous visual artists through a structured program.

Since 2007, this association has initiated a springtime event in the form of a festival, known as the Printemps de l’art contemporain (Spring of Contemporary Art). For its 16th edition from May 2nd to May 18th, 2024, the focus is on performance art.

To mention just one artist among the 160 involved, as listed on the p-a-c.fr website, Santiago Reyes, accustomed to action in public spaces, responds to the restriction of the right to protest observed globally, including in France, where protestors are being treated as violators of public order and are judged immediately in court.

Thus, on May 5th, at the invitation of the Tchickebe workshop and MAC Marseille, the artist will present « Infinite Trajectory, » a manifest form during which the artist, accustomed to action in public spaces, shifts the dynamics of protest into a solitary act by a single participant, exposing themselves through a series of gestures and images, transforming various situations encountered along a 7km route through the streets, avenues, and boulevards, over an expected time of 2.5 hours. This serves as numerous opportunities to demonstrate that movement and bodily engagement are still viable, conceived by Reyes as an exhibition.
