STERLING RUBY PRESENTS HIS FIRST FASHION COLLECTION

By Crash

Artist Sterling Ruby has finally revealed his first ever ready-to-wear collection under the moniker S.R. Studio. LA. CA. (for men and women) and has chosen Florence to showcase it. It came as a bit of a surprise, seeing as Ruby is more well known for his paintings than his jackets but the artist has already done his fair share of fashion collaborations throughout the years. We all remember his work with Raf Simons at Calvin Klein, designing the amazing stores in New York and Paris. And believe it or not, Sterling has actually been sewing for more than thirty years, so he wasn’t as much a newbie as people might think.

The collection started out strong with looks that seemed to be reminiscent of an artist painting in his atelier and splashing paint all over his shirt, slouchy denim pants and dungarees. It could be said that he was actually channeling himself and his experience in these first outings, signaling this brand was absolutely personal and not just a publicity stint. Then came amazing grungy dresses in a tie-dye of deep red and black or completely splattered in yellow, green and brown. The vibe was definitely art-school meets 90s icon. Combos of funky knitwear and great denim harkened back to the young designer duo Eckhaus Latta who have also been blending art and fashion in an inventive way. All the acid-wash denim were the stand-out pieces from the collection and we can imagine they’ll sell out super quick. Check out some of the silhouettes below.
