« STRANGE WAY OF LIFE » BY PABLO ALMODÓVAR MARKS SAINT LAURENT’S DEBUT AT FESTIVAL DE CANNES.

By Léo Mazzella

Saint Laurent production present their two first productions at the Cannes Film Festival, with an exclusive Godard project and an original film written and directed by Pablo Almodóvar.

Entitled « Strange Way Of Life », the movie takes place in the Far West of America. We are in 1910 and we follow the relationship between Silva (Pedro Pascal) and Sheriff Jake (Ethan Hawke). The two compagnons haven’t seen each others for 25 years and their first night together reignites the passion they have for one another. Unfortunately, their personal motives take over the morning after as menacing revelations are made.

Loyal to classic Western settings, Strange Way Of Life opens a conversation about queer relationships in the genre, known for its conservative values. Art takes an important place in the movie, for example, there are several paintings by Maynard Dixon in Sheriff Jake’s house, one of the first artists to represent landscapes from the American West, with native Indians and cowboys.

The entire wardrobe was designed by Saint Laurent under the guise of Anthony Vaccarello, who took his inspiration from the style of the great actors of the time.

The film was shot in a town built in Almeria as a set for the legendary dollar trilogy (The Good, The Bad, The Ugly; For a Few Dollars More and A Fistful of Dollars). Fifty years the later, the artifice built in a few weeks prior shooting became somewhat real after the dusty environment reclaimed its rights.

Pablo Almodóvar and Saint Laurent make the perfect pair for this one-of-a-kind Western story, infused with stunning visuals, intricate characters and a phenomenal cast.

«I have always admired the women in Pedro’s films, both strong and vulnerable. In Strange Way of Life his male characters have the same complexity.»

Anthony Vaccarello
