SUZANNE SYZ X DAVID MALLETT

By Roisin Breen

David Mallett and Suzanne Syz have finally dropped the second collection in their series of creative collaborations. A selection of beautiful, safety-pin style hair pins designed with all kinds of hair aesthetics in mind. The versatile but sturdy form allows the wearer to adapt the style to suit their needs: a neat up-style do for an event, a quick-styled, off-the-face bun in the middle of the day, or a rock and roll half-up/half-down do.

The unique clasp style and silver or 18k gold body protects the hair shafts from breakage and damage unlike typical hair clips on the market. The safety pin style is a nod to David’s first steps in the industry, in a punk era London, when do it yourself fashion trumped the runways and icons like Vivienne Westwood and Zandra Rhodes were ripping up the rule books.

“The object of the safety pin, I find beautiful and gorgeous, and I want to bring this into hair and represent the beginning of my career in fashion.” Says David.

David Mallett is Paris’ preferred coiffeur to the stars, his iconic but mystic salon sitting in the heart of the city’s second district discreetly welcomes its clientele, hailing from the fashion and creative worlds in Paris and beyond. Renowned for her innovative, tongue-in-cheek designs Suzanne Syz was born in Geneva, educated in Paris but truly formed in a booming 1980’s New York when the art world was similarly ripping up the rule books and shaking things on their head. The creative and rebellious spirit ignited within her in New York still informs her designs today and her bold use of color and form has garnered her a cult following.

The two first met when Suzanne was a client of the salon and their creative relationship flourished seamlessly. After discovering a shared love of art and design, vibrant colors, fashion, travel and language, the harmonious fusion between the pair was a catalyst for a creative collaboration to begin. Their synergy led to the inception of their first collaborative creation, the « Bague de cheveux », and has evolved into the masterpiece that is the « Épingle à cheveux. »

Available now online and in the Paris salons.
