ON THE RUNWAY AT VIVIENNE WESTWOOD FALL WINTER 2016

« Everybody is talking/ But only our map gives the complete picture. » The Vivienne Westwood Fall Winter 2016 press release expresses Dame Vivienne’s green convictions loud and clear: it’s time to start a revolution. With a handwritten handout, on which the designer and incredible climate advocate wrote a series of notes (« If the bees die, we die, » « Au$terity is stupid, » « Water is more precious than oil »), comes a world map almost entirely painted red – except for a tiny green part at the extreme North. This « Uninhabitable Land » represents the alarming temperature raise in the years to come. As for the collection, the designer presents Renaissance-inspired pieces, most precisely influenced by Italian sculptor Donatello in the draping and overall silhouettes, as well as Spanish Renaissance artist El Greco for the rich colors and patterns. Colors are indeed a big part of this collection, and the inspiration is repeated in the make up details. A messy red lips reminds of Westwood’s punk roots, while fingers are painted silver to add a layer of lightness. Dame Vivienne never ceases to impress and excite, and this season, she does it with an energetic collection, full of drama, drive, and sexiness.
