WINNIE NEW YORK RELEASES ITS SPRING-SUMMER ’25 COLLECTION

By Chloe Edstein

The Winnie New York Spring/Summer 2025 collection draws inspiration from punk culture, particularly from artists like Bad Brains that initiated the punk wave. Idris Balogun, the creative director, was further sparked by subcultures and wanted to recreate that essence with a contemporary aesthetic approach; the Beatniks served as inspiration for the previous season. Punk, according to Balogun, is more than just music; it’s an attitude, and he aimed to capture that spirit in his clothing for this collection.

Balogun engaged Marcus Leslie-Singleton, a visual artist based in New York, to produce an artwork that embodies all of the season’s themes, carrying on the brand’s collaborative approach with artists.

Standout items from the collection include coats with detachable snapped sleeves and sleeveless lapel shirts, which further accentuate the punk, sartorial vibe. A sophisticated cognac-coloured leather jacket with ribbing made of cow-hide leather. For the first time, jumpsuits are included in the collection, a nod to Bad Brains’ reimagining of janitors’ and waste collectors’ recycled uniforms. offered in two styles: a Prince of Wales check wool mohair blend and a cotton twill version. Marcus’s artwork adorns knitted t-shirts, traditional suits in check patterns, and carryover tennis jackets made of lightweight wool that exude attitude.

Oko Ebombo, a French musician of Congolese ancestry, is another artist whose work struck a chord with Balogun. His music and accompanying graphics perfectly encapsulated the mood Balogun was going for with the Spring/Summer 2025 collection. Following their mutual artistic connection, it was only a matter of time before Ebombo was featured as the lookbook’s face. This season’s collection is more subdued than previous ones because Balogun sought to return to the brand’s original essence with great intentionality. He recently relocated to Paris in pursuit of new endeavours, where he took up the role of Head of Menswear Design at Lacoste and managed Winnie.
